LEARNS Diabetes Project

OUR MISSION

To provide a source of sustained funding and ongoing support to all Virginia school divisions in order to provide standardized and equitable professional development for school staff in the management of care for students with diabetes.

OUR VISION

Facilitating standardized and purposeful diabetes education of school staff members responsible for managing care of students with diabetes.

“Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAPs), school nurses, bus drivers, teachers, and assistants were offered the program. It cut down on man-hours and space needed for extra group training. Having the online self-paced option helped with this problem. Over 500 staff started the training and called it wonderful and comprehensive. When the staff had some trouble with the E-learning software and printing certificates, they reached out to the company representatives and found them very responsive in taking care of concerns. It helped a lot of new staff who needed to be brought up to date. It was long, but does provide required training in addition to hands-on time.” —-Jeannie

Lions Empowering and Aiding Regional Nurses in Schools (LEARNS) Project

An ongoing project will be funded to benefit children with diabetes attending Virginia Schools. This training is funded by a generous grant of $18,000 from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and local Lions Clubs District 24-L. The Virginia Diabetes Council (VDC) members working with the Lions Clubs International Foundation and local Lions Club District 24-L identified the need for additional training and support to diabetes education resources within the school system.

With the initial success of the pilot, the LEARNS Project team now encourages each school division to participate in this project. The team is currently seeking funding opportunities to enroll elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the state. While primary funding supports the 24-L (North/Central Virginia) region, we are actively supporting expansion ideas. Please refer to the memo below and contact schools@virginiadiabetes.org to begin the next steps. We will reach out to the School Health Coordinators to enroll or re-enroll staff members once the grant for the next school year is approved. Thank you for teaming up with us in this initiative.

UPDATE: As of the 2022 School Year the LEARNS team has enrolled over 7500 participants including school nurses, assistive personnel, teachers, administrative staff, bus drivers, and school board members! (See school list below)
